BREATH[e] Designed and Directed by Steve Lucas The Theatre Centre, 1087 Queen Street West Thursday, April 25 - Saturday, May 18, 2002 ONLY! news articles on this production images from this production reviews of this production BREATH[e] is a play. A play without words or actors. A play without words or actors which communicates a story. BREATH[e] is a play. A play that enters your body through your eyes and ears and mouth. A play where the action takes place inside of your lungs. A play that happens to you. BREATH[e] is a play. BREATH[e] redefines what a play is. "BREATH[e] was compelling and unlike anything I'd ever seen, pretty close to a religious experience." James O'Reilly, Writer/Actor Since 1987 Steve Lucas has designed sets and lighting for more than 160 productions of theatre, dance, performance art and opera. Nominated 20 times, Steve is a three-time Dora Award winner. Steve's first foray into producing was a successful revival of Daniel MacIvor's JUMP, a play with actors but no words. Naturally, the second production Steve tackles as a producer has neither actors nor words. Inspired by Beckett and his wordless play BREATH, Steve is also a theatre pioneer, but for the 21st Century. "I was in awe of Steve's work in BREATH[e]. It is the most unique theatrical expression that I have seen on a Toronto stage. BREATH[e] reawakens the mind to the vast possibilities of what theatre can be. It turns the stage into a painting, a living interactive landscape that invites the audience on a trip into the imagination." Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director Nightwood Theatre In November 2000 the unprecedented reaction to a one-week workshop of BREATH[e] saw sold out performances and extra shows added. The creators of BREATH[e] were not prepared for the spontaneous, unanimous, passionate show of support. They had no choice but to present a full production in a longer run. "For every person that ventures down this rabbit hole, the experience will shape a different story." Susan Walker, The Toronto Star BREATH[e] is an experimental art installation of light and sound which takes the audience on a journey of the heart and mind. "I was one of the fortunate ones that saw BREATH[e] at the Theatre Centre a year and a half ago. It was a transcendent experience that was original and life-affirming." Layne Coleman, Artistic Director Theatre Passe Muraille BREATH[e] is a sensual, sensory voyage which only the imagination can decipher. "BREATH[e] was a remarkable experience, sensuous, visceral, provocative, alarming. It was a piece of magic, a ceremonial event, a true act of theatre." Paul Bettis, Writer/Actor/Director The room is dark, the seats are few. You sit and wait until a blackness creeps up over you, embraces you, and then the sound begins - the heartbeat sound, the rasping sound, it surrounds you and swallows you until you are unsure if it comes from outside of you or from within you. Keep your eyes open. Keep your heart beating. And don't forget to breathe… Complete program for the current production BREATH[e] Designed and Directed by Steve Lucas Original Music by Steve GordonMarsh • Associate Lighting Designer Sandra Marcroft The Theatre Centre, 1087 Queen Street West (enter via south door off Dovercourt) Thursday, April 25 - Saturday, May 18, 2002 ONLY!
